"ARCHETYPE" Morrigan is described as a triple goddess. She is said to form a triad together with Macha (crow / battle) or Nemain (frenzy / venomous) and Babd (crow / fury). But she would also be considered as an archetypical goddess whose three aspects are Macha, Nemain and Babd. Sometimes she is also associated with Fea. Following aspects are mainly emphasized: fate, death and fertility goddess, warrior, crone, prophetess, passionate lover, shape shifter, enchantress, sorceress, and of course mother. Morrigan - which means: Great Queen (mor-rhigan) - is mainly described as an old grey-haired woman or as a fearful either dark- or red-haired strong and wild woman. But she sometimes also appears as a beautiful and attractive young maiden, dressed in brightly colored clothes. As a powerful goddess she is mainly associated with the frightening aspects of female energy. She is said to be the three phases of the silver moon: waxing, full, and waning. Her realms would be the North (fate / the land of the Dead). Other symbols relating to Morrigan would be: willow (tree), clear quartz (gem), earth (element), mare, crow, cow, raven (animals). And what would Morrigan say ? Ha-ha-ha-ha ! |
THE FACTS These descriptions may be found in almost every book or on many internet websites. Furthermore the same confusion appears in most reports: Morrigan is said to be Morgaine. But Morgaine war no more than one of Her High Priestesses, even if she was indeed a famous one. Though very few information may be taken for granted. Morrigan, the real "Great Queen" existed a long time ago and belonged to the Tuatha De Danaan. Her origins reach directly back to a time where mankind was just born - at the latest. If your belief in Morrigan is based upon "knowledge", "traditions" or "material" that is a little younger than that, then it is already the youngest version of this goddess which you honor (this includes wicca as well as almost all druids and witches) A version which does not earn the name of "Great Queen" any more. Be sure no writings will ever tell you the truth about Morrigan as well as real visions i.e. encounters could. I do not even mention hallucinations.... As the Writings began Morrigan was already this "amputated" creature described today as an archetype who hardly earn to be called goddess. A real god or goddess knows and respects the universal laws. This one, as well as some others, does not. My job is not to think for you. But there is a simple system which reconciles all aspects of any goddess so that it always makes sense and thus a complete goddess. Personally I only invoke complete deities, not castrated ones. What about you ? |
